About Doss Ferry - The History

Bringing History to Life……………

Recalling the early 1800’s brings out a time of simplicity where life was enjoyed and the land was undisturbed. The small town of Kimberly, Alabama was virtually undiscovered until Ambrose Doss began shipping coal to Mobile, Alabama. Known for marketing coal as a heating element; the Doss family brought life to this historic small town. With Ambrose Doss and the lifestyle of a small town as our inspiration we honored the Doss Family name with the new community of Doss Ferry.

The history of Kimberly lives long through all its historic sites. The Warrior River that runs along side Doss Ferry is where Mr. Doss first discovered coal. Today’s city hall was previously the first mining office for the Coal Company. Mortimer Jordan High School was one of the first schools attended by children in central Alabama during the early 1900’s.

The community of Doss Ferry is dedicated to the lifestyle of past townsmen. Town gatherings at ball games and quilting parties were traditional Sunday afternoon activities and all-night dancing kept everyone in high spirits. The tradition of a simple time and a simple life will live through Doss Ferry.
